Located just an hour and a half from the Carolina coast, Fayetteville, NC gets just enough cold weather to break out the jackets and hats, but it’s mild enough to enjoy fun outdoor activities all winter long. With January highs averaging in the mid-50s, it’s the perfect time of year to get outside and enjoy some of our favorite things to do.

 

Winter Activities and Events in Fayetteville, NC

 

1) Downtown Fayetteville

There are hundreds of shops, restaurants, and venues to explore in the Cool Spring Downtown District. Throw on a jacket and sunglasses and stroll through this vibrant city center with so much to do and see. The Fascinate-U Children’s Museum is a great place to spend a morning or afternoon with the family, or bring them to Greg’s Pottery to create their own clay masterpieces. Movie buffs will love the Cameo Art House Theatre, where you can watch art, independent, foreign and classic films in velvet covered, cast iron chairs, and the Gilbert Theater stages contemporary and classical theatrical productions throughout the year (Othello is coming in March!). For an after work beer (or anytime, really), stop by Southern Pines Brewing Co., the newest taproom set to open in Downtown Fayetteville this year.

 

2) Military Museums and Memorials

Fayetteville is home to the world’s largest military base and offers many ways to learn about our country’s military history and accomplishments. The U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum (ASOM) highlights over 80 years of history — from World War II to the Global War on Terrorism — through permanent exhibits, school tours, virtual tours, and continuing education. Just across the street in Veterans Park, you’ll find statues dedicated to paratroopers and K-9 soldiers.

 

3) Botanical Gardens

Once the dazzling Holiday Lights in the Garden are over, there’s still much more to enjoy in the beautiful and serene Cape Fear Botanical Garden all winter long. Kids will love themed day camps that offer hiking, treasure hunting and animal observation, family story times, and after-school classes. Adults have a chance to reconnect with nature and focus on wellness with tai chi and yoga classes in the gardens.

 

4) Ziplining

Enjoy Fayetteville’s scenic beauty from above! Zipquest Waterfall & Treetop Adventure Park is a top-rated zipline park and offers multiple adventures, as well as great outdoor play areas. Be amazed by views of a massive waterfall on the Waterfall Expedition, or fly through the trees on the Treetop Excursion. 

 

5) Hiking

If you love a good hike when the weather is cool and the humidity is low, you’ll love the many trails in and around Fayetteville. Local favorites for moderate hikes are the Cape Fear River Trail and the Green, Blue and Black Trail. For a more relaxed walk there’s the Longleaf Pine and Fox Squirrel Loop and Mazarick Park Loop.
